As we witness the violence that continues to unfold in Palestine/Israel, and how people throughout the world are treating each other as we collectively attempt to process the brutality and scale of pain witnessed, we are experiencing what many of you may be experiencing, moments of terror, rage, grief, overwhelm, powerlessness, as well as moments of great mobilization and solidarity.

While we attempt to hold the pain of everyone involved, we call for the violence to end. Genocidal violence and systemic oppression are, and always have been, unacceptable conditions for life to flourish. We don’t know what the solution is to ending these cycles of brutality, except that it will not be born from the same actions, reactions or conditions that gave rise to them.

We acknowledge the effects of colonization, how being stripped of sovereignty and dignity and basic necessities makes people susceptible to desperate means for freedom and safety. We see the heart of this issue as systemic and intergenerational, the traumas stemming from the effects of European/Anglo colonization and genocide. Our stance is one of liberation, for all oppressed people, including transformation and healing for oppressors.

While we are an organization made up of people with a variety of perspectives, what we share is a common vision for collective healing. Our role at Gather Well is to foster within our students and within ourselves, the ability to engage reality from an embodied place, from the heart - where we have a chance of feeling a connection to others, and to stay with discomfort long enough to allow it to stir us, to disrupt our patterns of complacency, of turning away, numbing out, dissociating and to pause long enough for solutions beyond reactionary moves like vengeance and retaliation to emerge. If we are willing to look, we might begin to see just how deeply our own liberation is connected to the liberation of others.

Understanding this can be a giant first step toward healing. Trauma isn’t the thing that happened, it’s the story we adopted about the thing that happened, it’s what got lodged in the body from an experience or series of experiences. Seeing this, we can begin to uncouple who we are from what happened to us. Psychedelic healing has much to offer in this realm as it has the potential to help us see the truth of who we are more clearly.

Our co-lab is underway, a process where we’ve invited our future program facilitators to participate in a collaborative journey. It will serve to strengthen the upcoming Groundwork program (prerequisite to the Apprenticeship Program and a stand-alone transformational journey) while offering a place to enrich our connection and understanding of each other. We are so enlivened by the passion, skill and artistry each facilitator will be bringing to the upcoming training.

Looking to the non-human world for guidance on how to do leadership. 🌿🌿🌿

We are learning about ourselves as an “organization” that we are most aligned with leadership styles not as commonly used by the dominant culture.

We’re leaning into collaborative leadership where each member of the team has an opportunity to participate from a place of soulfulness, feeling the support of the other members, avoiding burnout and ideally being nourished by the work they do here. How we lead has everything to do with the future of our programs and the experience students will have with us. Not as many examples of this in the biz/non-profit sector, but we get to be creative. 🌱

A riddle for organizations (or anyone) striving to exist in late stage capitalism.

It’s not uncommon during a psychedelic experience for there to be grief around climate collapse, species loss, or just the awareness of how disconnected from what we call “nature” (a dualistic construct) we have become. When we feel that connection to life, to source, to Earth, to Gaia, which psychedelic healing work can awaken, there is sometimes grieving. That grief is important. It’s holy. Imagine if more & more people were connected to that grief. The fear is sometimes that grief will swallow us, but the reality is that it sets us free. Our tears may help germinate the seeds of future forests. #thesalinesolution #holygrief
